Venous Treatments

Capital Cardiovascular Specialists PLLC

Varicose and spider veins are often only thought of as cosmetic issues. But for some, they can cause great discomfort, pain, and swelling in the legs.

There are many treatment options for varicose veins, including compression stockings, which are specially designed to prevent varicose veins from worsening by compressing your legs and increasing blood flow.

At Capital Cardiovascular Specialists in metro Washington, DC, cardiologist Dr. Shawn Howell will evaluate your condition to determine whether venous insufficiency or poor circulation is the cause. Dr. Howell will then educate you about your condition and discuss your treatment options with you.

We offer the following minimally invasive treatments for varicose and spider veins:

Microphlebectomy

Also known as ambulatory phlebectomy, this minimally invasive surgical technique is used to treat painful, unpleasant medium-to-large varicose veins that are located close to the skin's surface. During the procedure, Dr. Howell removes the varicose veins through a series of small needle punctures using a special set of instruments.

Microphlebectomy is ideal for treating veins that are too large to treat with sclerotherapy and too small to safely and successfully treat with laser procedures.

Endovenous Ablation

During endovenous ablation (also called endovenous laser treatment or EVLT), a laser fiber is inserted through a catheter into the affected vein and heats the vein wall, causing it to collapse, shrink, and eventually disappear. This technique, which we can do in our office, takes less than 30 minutes to perform.

Sclerotherapy

During this minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure, Dr. Howell injects a solution into your veins to shrink and dissolve them, which causes the blood to reroute to healthier veins. Multiple sclerotherapy treatments are typically needed to achieve your desired results. Dr. Howell will assess your veins to determine how many treatments you need. Each session is relatively quick and you can resume normal activity afterwards.
